Loss is not only about bereavement. We experience loss as a result of different changes that occur in our lives. Even when change is our choice we can feel loss. Such as when we decide to end a relationship, or become a parent for the first time when we have to compromise on our independence.

Sometimes we are not consciously aware of our feelings of loss, but find ourselves acting differently, in a way that might be detrimental to us or others. We can experience loss for a variety of life changes, some examples are:-

Relationship separation and divorce

Loss of independence when becoming a parent

Becoming a single parent

Children leaving home

Children becoming young adults wanting more autonomy

Aging

Identity - gender and sexuality

Unemployment/Redundancy/Retirement/Bankruptcy

Menopause

Infertility

Ill Health and Disability

Loss of home and stability

Mental health problems in others close to us

Becoming a Carer

Moving to another area or country
